4 Things To Check When Buying A used engine
The quality of used engines for sale varies from yard to yard, and also from engine to engine. In South Africa the distance between the buyer and seller can be a daunting one as well, especially if you're buying a big-ticket item such as an engine that has been removed from a truck or car. You don't want to end up with a headache because you bought something that wasn't what it appeared on the surface. Here are some things you should know before you buy an engine in South Africa:
Oil Quality Check
One of the most important things you should check before anything else is the engine's oil. This needs to be clean and free from debris, rust or water in order for it to perform properly. If you notice any signs of contamination when checking the oil, don't buy this engine under any circumstances. It could cause major damage to your vehicle, and that would just be a waste of money!
Another thing that you should check before committing to buy a used engine is the compression in the cylinders. This will indicate whether or not the engine has been repaired recently, and if there's any damage. There are many reasons why it's important to know if an engine has been altered because depending on the type of modification, you could be spending money buying repairs every month. Check out the video below for more information:
For diesel engines, you should also do a leak-down test. Leaks can cause wastage of fuel and poor performance efficiency which means less power and ultimately lower your bank balance over time! The way this works is by testing how much air pressure leaks during the stroke of each cylinder. It might be difficult to measure this, so you could ask the yard for assistance with that.
Basic Engine Inspection
This is simply checking the exterior of the engine for signs of any damage. For example, it should not have any leaks or corrosion - especially if it was taken out from a truck! Another thing you should check is whether or not there are any wires missing because this would mean that something was pulled off recently which means someone else has altered it (and they're probably not qualified to do so). All in all, these are just some checks that you need to make before buying an engine in South Africa- always remember that you are responsible for the engine you buy.
