Mazda Astina 1.3 16V Engine FAQ
4 Things To Check When Buying A used car engine
Oil Quality Check
It is important to check the oil quality of a used engine before buying it. If the oil is black and has an unpleasent smell, this means that there may be dirt in it which can damage your engine. However if the oil looks clean and smells like new oil, this means that there are no major problems with the car.
Compression Testing
This test will tell you how much power the engine can create. It is done by putting a pressure gauge onto each cylinder of the engine, then turning it on. The numbers that are given show to what extent the cylinder can compress air before an explosion happens. If there are no compression issues, the numbers would be very high. However if there are problems with one or more cylinders, it means that they need repair since combustion can't happen properly in them anymore.
Leak-down Testing
Also known as "block tester testing", this method helps determine whether all cylinders have good compression and proper valve function. The block tester contains a rubber bulb attached to a tube filled with a gas, usually Freon. Each cylinder is tested by exhausting the gas from the block tester into the cylinder through the spark plug hole. The pressure of the gas in each chamber is recorded and compared to manufacturers specifications for that particular engine type.
Basic Engine Inspection
When buying a used car engine, it can be hard to determine whether any problems with it exist without having somebody who knows about cars very well take a look at it. If you do not have somebody knowledgeable around you, you can always go online and search for "used car engines". You can then contact some dealerships or sellers to let them know what you are looking for and ask if they would like their best price.
Conclusion
Please note the above information acts as guide only and you should always check everything with a qualified mechanic.
