4 Things To Check When Buying A used car engine

    Oil Quality Check

When checking the oil, make sure that it is not dirty or black. If it is black then you should be looking at another engine because this one has been run very low on oil, which will result in extensive damage to the engine when you start using it. Dirty oil can indicate parts are being worn down, but this does not mean that the engine isn?t worth using. It just means that you have to keep changing the oil for a while before starting up, otherwise there might be some problems with seizing pistons.

    Compression Testing

This is an excellent method of checking how much life is left in your car's motor. Make sure that all cylinders have similar readings, if not then there's something wrong with the engine. If one cylinder has extremely low readings then you might have an issue with that particular piston or piston rings.

    Leak-down Testing

This test involves using compressed air to see whether the tightness of the cylinders is good enough for running. Poor compression usually means there are worn out parts which will need replacement. High leakage could be a sign of oil having been used instead of coolant when it should not have been, which can destroy your car's motor very quickly. In this case you need to replace the valves and cylinder head, because they would almost certainly be damaged from overheating.

    Basic Engine Inspection

By checking the varying components and looking out for signs of damage you can determine the general quality and health of your engine. Things like oil leakage, whether or not all belts are intact and working, etc. will indicate how well you should expect this motor to run in the future. It is also a good idea to get a mechanic to check it out if possible because they will be able to look under the hood and guide you by explaining what they see without actually fixing any problems themselves. This way you'll have an idea before buying about what issues may arise after purchasing this particular unit.

    Conclusion

The above information acts as guide only and you should always check everything with a qualified mechanic. Please note these points are very generalised and mechanics will look for different details when inspecting an engine, but it's definitely worth having at least oil quality checked by them before purchasing a used engine.
