This is a 16 valve engine made in Japan. It comes under the group of 4A-FE (4 cylinder, A stands for gasoline (carburetor), FE means electronic fuel injection). It replaced the old engine 2393 cc 3S-FE engine which had carburetor with it's production starting from year 1988 to 1996 April.

Corolla is known for quality and performance that it offers. The 1.6i was developed keeping in mind all important points like combustion efficiency, smooth running capability, reliability etc. The main highlight of this engine is its 12 valves i.e. 4 for intake and 8 for exhaust, which ensures high performance output with low fuel consumption.
It has crankshaft throw of 85mm for better balancing and reduced vibration along with stiffer metal parts. It is equipped with VVT-i (Variable Valve Timing - intelligent system) that gives more power than any other engine in its category around the world .

The power rating ranges from 83 hp @ 6000 rpm for 1NZ-FE to 96 hp @ 6200 rpm for 4AFE.
The Corolla 1.6i can give awesome performance in mid range and top end too. The total curb weight of car depends on engine configuration, size and type similar to other cars in its category. It weighs around 1150 kg (2533 lb) which is decent for this size of engine that it has. There are two air filters fitted with this engine i.e. one by Toyota Motor Corporation Japan and another by Mann filter company Germany which gives better filtration than any other brand available in the world .
There won't be much problem faced while using Corolla's 1.6i engine unless there is physical fault or worn out parts installed during manufacturing or some other misdoings during maintenance. The only problem that car owners might face is oil leakage after long use . Some cars use 10W-30 grade engine oil, which hasn't negative impact on the engine's condition but it reduces fuel efficiency to little extent.
Some of the common problems with this engine are timing belt tensioner breakage, faulty Idle Air Control Valve (IACV) and Throttle Position Sensor (TPS). There can be air flow meter failure too if proper care has not been taken while driving the car.
