Introduction To The W205 Mercedes Benz
Model history
It was in January 2014, on the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) for the first time presented to the public and replaced since 15 March 2014, built between March 2007 and May 2014 C-Class of the 204 series . The series production of the sedan began on February 4, 2014. The combination model ( Model T ) was first presented on 23 May 2014 for production plant in Bremen, the launch took place in September of the same year. The coupé premiered at the International Motor Show (IAA) in September 2015 and has been available since December. On February 29, 2016, as part of the Geneva Motor Show , the convertible version presented.
In March 2018, an extensive facelift – with 6,500 parts, over 50% of all parts were changed or replaced, – and a diesel plug-in hybrid version were presented at the Geneva Motor Show. It was launched on July 7, 2018.
Innovations
Weight Loss
The weight of the body-in-white of the 205 series is reduced by 70 kg due to the increased proportion of hot-formed steel parts, ultra-high-strength steel and aluminum. Most of the body parts visible from the outside are made of aluminum. Overall, the aluminum share of the body increased from nine percent in the previous model to 48 percent. Another part of the weight reduction of 100 kg is achieved by a smaller tank. As standard, this holds 41 liters including a reserve, 18 liters less than the predecessor. A larger fuel tank with 66 liters including reserve is available on request.
Suspension
The larger series were used for the chassis technology. The 205 is the first vehicle on the new modular MRA rear-wheel drive architecture . The new suspension has nothing in common with the previous series. The four-link- Front axle is made of aluminum, there is a five-link axle at the rear. The Agility Control suspension with steel suspension and selective damping system is standard. These suspensions are offered in three versions: the comfort-enhanced agility control suspension (standard with Exclusive), an agility control suspension with 15 mm lowering (standard with Avantgarde) and a sport suspension with sporty coordination of steering, damping and suspension 15 mm lowering (standard on AMG Line). As it shares the MRA platform with the next E-Class Mercedes-Benz series 213 (from 2016), the adaptive air suspension Airmatic is also in the C-Class for the first time Available with five different chassis modes (standard on the C 350 e). This is unusual in the middle class , otherwise only the Citroën C5 has comparable suspension ( hydropneumatics ) . Mercedes also offers a stepless, adaptive, high-end steel chassis. The Dynamic Body Control suspension comes from the E-Class and has been further improved with the W205 facelift. It can be set in 3 levels using Dynamic Select: Comfort, Sport and Sport +.
Automatic
The 205 series should be available from the start with a 9-speed automatic transmission from Mercedes-Benz in September 2013 at the Frankfurt Motor Show was presented in 2013 for the first time. Instead, it was announced in December 2013 that as an option, the 7-speed automatic transmission 7G-TRONIC PLUS is available. The 9-speed automatic 9G-TRONIC has been available for most engines since October 2016 , the C 180 d, C 300 h and C 350 e remain with the old 7-speed automatic.
Infotainment system
Furthermore, the model from Mercedes-Benz was the first to receive a touchpad for infotainment operation and a head-up display . As with competitors’ pads, letters and numbers can be entered via the touchpad. The multimedia system can also be operated with the touchpad, but a rotary pushbutton actuator is still available.
A digital instrument cluster has been installed since the 2018 facelift.
Hybrid and plug-in hybrid
Mercedes-Benz C 350 e plug-in hybrid
The 205 series C-Class is available in several full hybrid and plug-in hybrid variants:
The full-hybrid C 300 h diesel engine (until April 2015: C 300 BlueTEC HYBRID ) has an electric machine integrated into the gearbox with a maximum output of 20 kW and a lithium-ion battery with 0.8 kWh energy content, which means low power consumption Speeds and very low load requirement purely electric driving is made possible.
The gasoline plug-in hybrid C 350 e has an electric machine integrated in the gearbox housing with a maximum output of 60 kW and a torque of 340 Nm. In combination with the four-cylinder M274DEH20LA petrol engine, the system output is 205 kW (279 hp) and the system torque is 600 Nm. According to the NEDC, a purely electrical range of 31 km can be achieved. Since auxiliary units such as the water pump , the vacuum pump , the power steering pump and the air conditioning compressor were electrified, the conventional belt drive is no longer required. The generatorThe 12 V on-board electrical system is also fed from the high -voltage on-board electrical system via a DC / DC converter. Behind the rear axle is the approx. 100 kg, coolant-cooled lithium-ion battery with 6.38 kWh energy content , which increases the luggage compartment volume from 480 to 335 liters (limousine) or from 490–1510 to 450–1470 Liters (Estate) reduced. It is a lithium iron phosphate accumulator consisting of 88 cells (22 Ah, 3.3 V) connected in series with a nominal voltage of 290 V. Overall, the C 350 e is 230 kg heavier than the comparable C 250.
In 2019, two further plug-in hybrid variants were added: the C 300 e (2.0 R4 gasoline engine plus electric motor) and the C 300 de(2.0 R4 diesel engine plus electric motor). Both drive variants are available in the body variants with notchback (Otto-PHEV also optionally with 4matic all-wheel drive) and as a T-model (station wagon). The transmission changed to a 9G-Tronic (instead of 7G-Tronic in the C350e), the power of the electric motor grew to 90 kW, the torque to 440 Nm. The Li-ion battery changed to cells with an NMC cell chemistry with a capacity of 13.5 kWh, from which approximately 50 km of electrical range are possible. In Type 2, the charging connection remained on the rear bumper, but can now charge the battery in around two hours with a total of 7.4 kW. Due to the support with the environmental bonus and the change in the taxation of the monetary benefit of privately used company cars, it is expected that these PHEV variants will increase significantly in demand and sales.
