Founded in 1922 as ” Swallow Sidecar Company ” by William Lyons , it was renamed Jaguar Cars after World War II because of the unfortunate connotations of the initials SS , coinciding with the company name up until before World War II , SS Cars.

Jaguar is known for its luxurious sedans and sports cars , market segments it has been in since the 1930s.

The company was independent until it was integrated into the nationalized British Motor Corporation in 1966. Today the factories are on Browns Lane in Coventry , Castle Bromwich in Birmingham, and Halewood in Liverpool . The Browns Lane plant was closed in 2005, leaving production of aluminum vehicles at Castle Bromwich and steel vehicles at Halewood.
