Which type of gearbox does your car have?

• Manual — five- and six-speed boxes with a clutch pedal. Usually the simplest unit to swap; the clutch kit is often a separate item, so ask whether it is included.
• Torque-converter automatic — the conventional automatic, from bakkie autos on the Hilux and Ranger to ZF units in BMWs and 7G-Tronic boxes in Mercedes-Benz. Ask whether the torque converter comes with the gearbox.
• Dual-clutch (DSG, S-tronic, DCT, PowerShift, EDC) — two clutches plus an electronic control unit (the mechatronic), found on many Volkswagen, Audi, Ford, Hyundai and Renault models, plus BMW M-DCT and Mercedes 7G-DCT. A fault can sit in the clutch pack or the mechatronic rather than the whole box, so get a diagnosis before buying a complete unit.
• CVT (Multitronic, X-Tronic, IVT) — a continuously variable transmission, used on many Honda, Nissan, Hyundai and Renault models and older Audis. It shares almost no parts with a dual-clutch or a conventional automatic, so none of these types can be swapped for another.
